Part A: Curriculum music

At Nascot Wood Junior School, children have a one-hour music lesson each week in the second half term of each term. In addition to these lessons, every child attends weekly singing assemblies led by the music lead, to enrich their musical experience and work collaboratively across the school.

Our curriculum has been designed and planned by our music co-ordinator and is fully inclusive to allow everyone to access music lessons (please see table on the following page titled ‘Barriers to and solutions for Engagement, Progress and Achievement in Music’).

By the end of their primary school journey, children should leave school being able to sing in tune, confident in reading notation and to develop their own sense of style through composing and improvising.

Part B: Co-curricular music

We have a thriving instrumental peripatetic programme delivered by visiting specialist teachers from Herts Music Service. Pupils have the opportunity to learn the piano, violin, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet and trombone.

Children are able to learn musical instruments whatever their background or financial situation and the school may support children financially who are pupil premium to have instrument lessons free of charge.

Children in Year 3 and 4 are given the opportunity to participate in Choir, which is free to join.

Events run by Herts Music Service are e-mailed to parents.

 

 

Part C: Musical experiences

Performing to others is an integral part of our pupils’ musical development and they are given the opportunity to perform in a range of events including our summer concert, school assemblies and at our infant school.

The Year 6 children take part in the annual Young Voices Concert at the O2 arena.  They also perform in a Year 6 show at the end of the summer term.

The whole school take part in our annual Carol Service is held at St Andrews Church and which can be attended by parents.

Children are also given the opportunity to attend performances in London and the local area when appropriate, such as events at the Royal Albert Hall and London theatre venues.

 

In the future

During the next academic year, we would like to build in more opportunities for children to experience live music.  An application will be made to the Royal Opera House for the Schools’ Matinee Concerts and contact will be made with the Purcell School to try to arrange shared events.

We also aim to develop our relationships with local secondary schools to give our pupils chance to experience live performances by older pupils, which may lead to the opportunity to perform alongside them.
